/>HON. ESTER ANNA NGHIPONDOKA, MP
I am delighted to announce the provisional results of the Grade 12 Advanced Subsidiary Level candidates who sat for their Examinations in November/December 2021. We are announcing these results at the backdrop of very challenging past few years, for the Government of the Republic of Namibia in general, and for us in the education sector in particular.
Amidst all the other obstacles our Ministry encountered during the past academic year, the leaked question papers in some NSSCO subjects for the revised curriculum and Legacy was a huge set back to the Ministry and the country as a whole. Fortunately, this unpleasant incident did not affect the Advanced Subsidiary Level Examinations.
I am re-emphasizing that not a single NSSCAS level subject has been compromised. As a result, the Ministry made excellent strides in the finalization of this examination and is releasing these results earlier than planned. For this, I am most grateful to my team. The NSSCO/H (old and new) and NSSCAS results were all planned to be released during the week of 14-18 February 2022, just like in the case of 2020 results. The reason for that is simply because there was a national outcry that more time was needed to complete the syllabi and to fully prepare the Directorate of National Examinations and Assessment, as well as the learners at AS level.
The Ministry is cognizant of the fact that these candidates need to submit their provisional results to Institutions of Higher Learning during the registration period. As a result, my team worked tirelessly to ensure the early release of the provisional results, two weeks in advance. Communication to this effect has been forwarded to Institutions of Higher Learning locally and in South Africa and continuous engagements have reaped positive outcomes for our qualifying learners.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Allow me to enlighten you briefly as to why we introduced the Advanced Subsidiary Level. This has come after we noticed that the expansion of offering of subjects on Higher level in many schools proved to be problematic and that concern was debated in the Education Conference of 2011. The problem persisted with both curricula (NSSCO and NSSCH) running parallel because about 90% of schools limited themselves to only offer Ordinary level, while depriving learners the opportunity to take up subjects on Higher level.
Therefore, the need to reform the curriculum and for Namibia to expand the curriculum from Higher Level to Advanced Subsidiary Level which is offered in many countries across the world became more apparent. The Advanced Subsidiary Certificate is packed by Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA) at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). In terms of accreditation and benchmarking, our NSSCAS qualification is benchmarked against the AS qualification of Cambridge Assessment International Education and is recognized globally.
The aim of the Advanced Subsidiary curriculum is to expose and prepare the candidates with in-depth subject knowledge, high order thinking and analytical skills and ultimately preparing them to become better first year university students. The introduction of AS level has the following benefits for the education fraternity at large:
1. AS level presents many learners the valuable opportunity to still be in school after the completion of NSSCO in Grade 11.
2. It saves the education fraternity, the Institutions of Higher Education in particular, the cost of funding for bridging courses.
3. AS Level increases our candidates’ chances to access international universities and with a greater success rate.
4. Compared to NSSCH (higher level of old curriculum) many schools are now offering the AS curriculum, which resonates with our pillars of access and equity.
5. The candidates who graduate with a NSSCAS certificate are better prepared to handle the pressure and academic stress at their first year of tertiary studies.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The introduction of Advanced Subsidiary Level has brought excitement among especially educators and local universities because the quality of learners going to universities has been elevated. Namibian qualifications are now on par with the school leaving qualifications of most of the countries in the world and our children can compete globally for admission for their tertiary studies.
This occasion is historic and gives me immense pleasure and pride as the Minister of Education, Arts and Culture to announce the first ever Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level results for our trailblazers, the class of 2021. Our pioneers, together and under the guidance of their brave, resilient and perseverant teachers, withered many storms including that of COVID-19 to reach the final point of graduating from formal schooling with a brand new qualification, our own Namibia Advanced Subsidiary Certificate.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear fellow Namibians,
In total, five thousand and seven (5007) candidates sat for their Advanced Subsidiary Level National Examinations in twenty-eight (28) subjects at 102 full- time centers. Four thousand, five hundred and ninety-two (4592) and four hundred and fifteen (415) candidates wrote at 88 public schools and 14 Private schools, respectively.
As we all know by now, candidates must have obtained a C grade or better in subjects offered at NSSCO level to proceed to Gr.12 Advanced Subsidiary Class. The symbols that are used at AS Level for different grades are indicated in lower case as a, b, c, d, e and u for un-graded.
1. Performance of candidates in Science Subjects indicating the entries and cumulative percentages in each respective subject.
(Table 1.1)
Notwithstanding the difference in subject entries, Mathematics and Computer Science outperformed the other subjects in the Science field of study at grades a and b, whereas the peak of the other four subjects (Chemistry, Physics,
Biology and Agricultural Science is on c and d grades. On average, 89.5 percent of the entries are graded and 10.5 % are ungraded in this field nationally.
2. Performance of candidates in Commerce Subjects indicating the entries and cumulative percentages in each respective subject.
(Table 2.1)
This field has fairly low subject entries. However, the candidates for commercial field of study are outperformed by the candidates in the Science field across all the grades from a to d. A significant number (65.2%) of the candidates obtained d and better grades even though the performance is poorer when compared with the performance in the Science field, with (73.6%).
3. Performance of candidates in Second Languages indicating the entries and cumulative percentages in English and Afrikaans respectively.
(Table 3.1)
The performance of the candidates in English and Afrikaans Second Languages is exceptionally good with an average cumulative % of 86.2 at d and better grades.
The performance in twelve (12) First Languages indicates good performance with KhoeKhoegowab, German, Rukwangali, Rumanyo, Silozi and Thimbukushu scoring higher than 90% cumulative percentage at d and better grades. Whereas, the remaining 6 subjects scored below 90%, with the lowest being Oshindonga, scoring 57.8 cumulative percent for d and better grades.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
4. The first ever class of Advanced Subsidiary level (class of 2021) surely made us proud with the attainment of the following average cumulative percentages at each grade nationally.
(Table 4.1)
Can we please give them a round of applause!
5. The next table depicts the average percentage at each grade at national level which the class of 2021 achieved during the NSSCAS national examinations.
(Table 5.1)
The table above shows that more symbols are obtained at the a-c side, with the peak at c grade. This is the sound picture that any education system expects to see and one which we as a Ministry must not just strive towards, but work very hard to improve over the years!
On a very high note, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Let us put our hands together for the top ten performers for the 2021 Advanced Subsidiary level examinations. These are the pioneers, our trailblazers who proved to the nation that sheer dedicated efforts, sacrifices and hard work are rewarded.
Best performance in three best subjects were considered for this category because 3 subjects is the minimum requirement for the candidates to progress to AS level.
1
JADA IZAKS
Female
St Pauls College
Khomas
2
CHIKA LIBUKU
Male
St Pauls College
Khomas
3
NDATEELELA
NDJAMBA
Female
Gabriel Taapopi
Oshana
4
MELISSA NEL
Female
Edugate Academy
Otjozondjupa
5
PATRICK TENGA
Male
Elcin Nkurenkuru
Kavango West
6
PAAVO NGHIKEVALI
Male
Onawa SS
Omusati
7
ANDO AMUNKETE
Female
St Pauls College
Khomas
8
GRIFFITH BEZUIDENHOUDT
Male
Windhoek HS
Khomas
9
TULI-MEAMENO SHATONA
Female
Gabriel Taapopi
Oshana
10
MAGDEL VAN DER MERWE
Female
Windhoek Gymnasium
Khomas
In conclusion, Ladies and Gentlemen,
After presenting these results, I want to urge all the Regional and School leadership to go back to the drawing board in terms of the selection of schools to offer NSSCAS level. It is absolutely crucial to comply with candidate selection requirements. The class of 2021 has set the pace and a high standard. Therefore, we need to re-double our efforts to ensure that the performance continuously improve over the years. All Regional results must be analyzed, presented within the region and performance bases /support dialogues must be held. Subject teachers, Education officers and Principals should identify areas of improvement, prioritize teaching and learning and provide resources to enhance teaching and learning.
Finally, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Results will be available on the Ministry’s website and sms services as from today starting at 12h00 noon and ultimately also through the print media. Additional to that, the centers will also provide the statements of results for the individual candidates as from tomorrow, 03 February 2022.
I thank you!

THE majority of the 5 007 candidates who sat for the first-ever Advanced Subsidiary Level (ASL) Grade 12 exam obtained grades A to C. The results were released today. Minister of Education, Arts and Culture Ester Nghipondoka said the past academic year’s various challenges, the leaked question papers in some NSSCO subjects for …

[33

post-313774","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-breaking-news
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
