{"id":311566,"date":"2021-12-08T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-08T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=311566"},"modified":"2021-12-07T19:08:03","modified_gmt":"2021-12-07T17:08:03","slug":"namibian-youths-turn-green-to-gold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=311566","title":{"rendered":"Namibian youths turn green to gold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Staff Reporter<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AS food insecurity rises, vulnerable Namibian youths increasingly turn to urban farming.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of them is Soweriano Fredericks, a beneficiary of the Build Back Better (BBB) urban agriculture project at Farm Daweb, five kilometres east of Maltah\u00f6he in the Hardap Region.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The young man is determined to nurture his green fingers into a sustainable livelihood and to make a profitable and sustainable career choice through agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Farm Daweb is the Hardap region\u2019s project site for BBB.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This urban agriculture project is the brainchild of a multi-stakeholder partnership established by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, and is funded by the Government of Japan.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Namibia\u2019s BBB project is jointly implemented through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Namibia, in conjunction with the regional councils of Erongo, Kavango, Khomas and Hardap.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" data-effect=\"slide\"><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_container swiper-container\"><ul class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_swiper-wrapper swiper-wrapper\"><li class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_slide swiper-slide\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"766\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_image wp-image-311571\" data-id=\"311571\" src=\"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/AGRICULTURE-PROJECT-4-1024x766.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/AGRICULTURE-PROJECT-4-1024x766.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/AGRICULTURE-PROJECT-4-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/AGRICULTURE-PROJECT-4-768x574.jpg 768w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/AGRICULTURE-PROJECT-4-1536x1149.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/AGRICULTURE-PROJECT-4-401x300.jpg 401w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/AGRICULTURE-PROJECT-4.jpg 1883w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_caption gallery-caption\">Left to right &#8211; I was unemployed for several years and helpless, and with ten mouths to feed at home, including my son, it was very tough. Then the Build Back Better urban garden project appeared and turned my life around,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The implementation approach of BBB encourages horticultural crops production.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The project outputs address food sufficiency and nutritional deficiencies affecting urban communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Farm Daweb&#8217;s vision is to become a success story that impacts the community in Maltah\u00f6he by helping families survive the challenging times.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, just like Fredericks and the community, Farm Daweb&#8217;s journey has not been smooth sailing.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur livestock on the farm had it very bad because the drought wiped out all of the animals until the farm was left with nothing,\u201d Fredericks said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a calamity, but we have since faced the challenge and turned our eyes to horticulture. The support from our Government and UNDP Namibia, and the funding from the Japanese Government came at the right time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so happy that we can now donate vegetables to orphanages and churches here in our community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFarm Daweb also provides food for work and cash for work opportunities to several local youths in the community. This is very important for me because I know the challenges they are experiencing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fredericks and the other beneficiaries of the urban agriculture project continue to receive theoretical and practical training in horticultural practices and the establishment of a farming cooperative.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the BBB beneficiaries have been taken on excursions to similar urban agriculture schemes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They have witnessed live demonstrations on mulching and composting.
