THE proposed decriminalisation of sodomy and the legalisation of same-sex marriages would most likely hit a wall if politicians were to take account of the views of the overwhelming majority of the residents of the densely populated northern regions of Namibia, where such suggestions are rejected as \u201cunspeakable abomination\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Ovawambo traditional communities that populate the regions of Omusati, Oshana, Ohangwena and a large part of Oshikoto, are, by culture, not even allowed to debate issues related to homosexuality.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are the guardians of our people\u2019s customary norms and we totally reject any suggestion of legalising homosexual acts, let alone decriminalising sodomy,\u201d said George Nelulu, the chairman of the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority (OuTA).<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Dineinge Sheya, the secretary to Queen Martha Mwadinomho Kristian Nelumbu, said that the Oshiwambo culture does not even allow a discussion on homosexuality.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is an abomination, something that, in our traditional communities, is not at all open for discussion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Headman Kashona Malulu, spokesperson of the Ondonga Traditional Authority (OTA), said that talking about homosexual issues is one of those topics that would infuriate any normal Oshiwambo-speaking person.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot talk about normalising what is abnormal. Our culture allows only marriage between man and woman,\u201d said Oshakati resident, Thomas Kashihula.<\/p>\n

The Ovawambo traditional communities have since colonialism considered homosexual acts as abominable practice.<\/p>\n

In fact, in the past, people exhibiting homosexual inclinations had hot irons inserted in their anuses, a punishment that was meant \u201cto teach them a lesson\u201d.<\/p>\n

An intense public debate is currently raging on all imaginable platforms about the possible legalisation of same-sex marriages in Namibia and the proposed decriminalisation of sodomy and doing away with other obsolete laws dating from Namibia\u2019s colonial past.<\/p>\n

The debate was triggered by recent developments, including court cases on same-sex marriages and the Law Reform and Development Commission\u2019s proposal to abolish a number of laws, including the one that criminalizes sodomy and \u201cunnatural\u201d sexual acts such as\u00a0masturbation, oral sex, and anal intercourse between people of the same sex.<\/p>\n

Those who are demanding change emphasise the principle of equal rights for all, but those objecting are accusing the \u201curbanites\u201d of aligning with a \u201cgay lobby\u201d to subvert African norms.<\/p>\n
