THE Oshakati town council has finally clarified a situation that for many years was the source of conflict between taxi drivers and the residents of Ompumbu, an informal settlement located about two kilometres from the centre of the town.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The majority of taxi drivers claim that there is no taxi rank at Ompumbu, therefore, they insist that those passengers travelling to Ompumbu have to pay double, namely N$24 instead of the normal taxi fare of N$12.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This, more often than not, results in fierce quarrels between taxi drivers and their passengers.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sometime last year an Informant\u00e9 reporter, who stumbled upon a taxi driver quarrelling with his passengers, tried to defuse the situation by contacting Penda Nakathingo, the chairperson of the Namibia Bus and Taxi Association (NABTA). He explained that there was a taxi rank at Ompumbu and commuters should only pay the normal taxi fare.<\/p>\n

But the taxi driver was supported by his counterparts who stopped by and they vowed that, in the absence of a taxi rank sign, they would ignore whatever Nakathingo says about the matter.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The issue came to the fore Tuesday when Oshakati local councillors held a public meeting at Ompumbu. The residents used the opportunity to demand a clarification of the situation.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The reply was straightforward: \u201cOmpumbu has a taxi rank and the normal taxi fare applies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur suffering is over,\u201d was Ompumbu resident Fiina Iiyambo\u2019s reaction.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, many residents still doubt whether the taxi drivers would accept the town council\u2019s ruling.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking to Informant\u00e9 after the gathering, Ompumbu resident Niky Minaj who is himself a taxi-owner said that the problem originated when the taxi rank sign was misplaced, erected deep inside the settlement instead of being put along the Oshakati-Omungwelume main road that passes through the settlement.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMany taxi drivers are sincerely not aware that this taxi rank sign exists. It was put at the wrong place,\u201d he said pointing to the taxi rank sign near his shebeen, about 300 metres from where it was supposed to be.<\/p>\n
