We also fulfil an educational role as we prevent and combat crime,\u201d said Aiyambo while addressing residents of the Ompumbu location of Oshakati Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aiyambo was part of an Oshakati town council entourage that is conducting a four-month long series on public meetings in the various informal settlements.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He focused on cooperation between the public and the police in rooting out crime, saying that the police expect the community to play a role in preventing and combating crime by tipping off the police about suspected criminal activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Police officers are also educators\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hdvZ9Ae_f9s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>PICTURED: Inspector Thomas Aiyambo addressing a community meeting at Ompumbu that was attended by Oshakati Mayor Leonard Hango and his deputy Puyeipawa Elifas. &#8211; Video footage: Placido Hilukilwa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also urged residents to cooperate with the volunteers of the Women and Men Network against crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of you label them as \u2018Aiyambo\u2019s puppets\u2019 what is not good. They are there for you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He further addressed a perception among the public that the police arrest and then immediately release suspects on bail.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not release suspects. We arrest them, charge them and take them to court. It is the court, not the police, that decides whether to grant or not to grant bail, having carefully looked at the nature of the case,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also addressed longstanding complaint about the police\u2019s slow reaction whenever a crime is reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aiyambo explained that police stations are sometimes inundated with crime reports and they have to prioritize due to the limited number of vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, if separate cases of murder, armed robbery and common assault are reported simultaneously and we have only one vehicle, then we have to prioritize the most serious before attended to the others,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Warrant Officer Frieda Shikole Ashiyana who accompanied Aiyambo explained the benefits of having a neighbourhood watch, how it works and how to establish one.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeighbourhood watch has proved to be very effective in preventing crime,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ompumbu residents were also warned against alcohol and drug abuse.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Mayor Puyeipawa Elifas spoke of alcohol as the cause of many societal problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She warned that small kids are abusing alcohol and drugs behind their parents back. \u201cThe solution is to keep them busy.
