{"id":303510,"date":"2021-04-23T13:27:12","date_gmt":"2021-04-23T11:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=303510"},"modified":"2021-04-23T13:27:15","modified_gmt":"2021-04-23T11:27:15","slug":"fao-donates-resources-to-battle-locusts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=303510","title":{"rendered":"FAO donates resources to battle locusts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maria David<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>THE Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) continues to assist Namibia to fight the outbreak of locusts by donating insecticide and other vital equipment to battle the scourge.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The FAO donated safety and gumboots, cotton overalls, chemical guard overalls, safety goggles and gloves, respirator masks all valued at about N$330 000.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The equipment will be distributed to all the locust-infested regions.<br \/>Officially handing over the donation, FAO Representative in Namibia Farayi Zimudzi, said it is vitally important that people are protected from the chemical as it can affect their health. The health of officials battling locusts in Namibia prompted the assistance.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Zimudzi stated that they have been supporting the effort of the Ministry of Agriculture in controlling locusts since the invasion began.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FAO donates resources to battle locusts\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y9YXy1dS8vE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We started here in the Zambezi Region and as the locusts have migrated, we have been providing support as well,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Zimudzi noted that they have also provided training for people to be able to control the further invasion of the locusts.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the donation FAO avail about N$7 million to be used for strengthening the capacity of the Plant Health Unit under DAPEES, MAWLR, procurement of locust surveillance\/monitoring and reporting tools comprising of two laptop computers, 40 tablet computers, and with the procurement of 160 kg of the environmentally friendly bio-pesticide (Metarhizium Acridum), enough to spray nearly 3 000 hectares.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Zambezi Governor, Lawrence Sampofu said since the beginning of 2020 they have battling the locust invasion.
