{"id":299867,"date":"2021-01-07T17:25:10","date_gmt":"2021-01-07T15:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=299867"},"modified":"2021-01-07T17:25:12","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T15:25:12","slug":"close-to-80-homes-in-windhoek-destroyed-by-rain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=299867","title":{"rendered":"Close to 80 homes in Windhoek destroyed by rain"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Zorena Jantze<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<p>FOR residents in the capital\u2019s informal settlements, recent heavy rain showers resulted in disaster as a total 79 households were flooded.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<p>The heavy rains, according to a situation report by the City of Windhoek, affected a total 71 households in Havana and eight households in Otjomuise.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<p>In the statement, City of Windhoek mayor, Job Amupanda reported that there was no loss of lives despite the disasters.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of this morning, and based on reported incidents, 71 households in Havana and eight in Otjomuise are affected, but thankfully, no loss of life has been recorded since the onset of the rainy season on 30 December 2020,\u201d said Amupanda.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Close to 80 homes in Windhoek destroyed by rain\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L4bctgxRbX0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>HAZARDOUS: Some parts of the Havana informal settlement which were flooded earlier this week. Video: contributed by Sean Naude.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He added that the City\u2019s emergency response teams attended to 14 flood-related incidents from 30 December 2020 to 5 January 2021.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<p>In addition, a multi-disciplinary team comprising of officials from the City Police, Human Settlement, Roads and Storm Water, and Emergency and Disaster Risk Management are regularly engaging the relevant stakeholders to mitigate the immediate risks and where appropriate, to relocate communities from flood risk areas to higher grounds.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<p>The weather projections indicate that more flash floods are expected for the remainder of the week.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<p>Amupanda further stated that residents who are particularly at risk are those residing in low-lying areas, near rivers or downstream of dams.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<p>He added that the City\u2019s Disaster Risk Management Committee and flood preparedness standby team have been activated during this period and will meet on a weekly basis to assess, plan and deploy the necessary responses.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease stay alert about the dangers of flash floods and in anticipation of future floods expected for the remainder of the week, according to the latest meteorological reports.
