{"id":299133,"date":"2020-12-13T15:58:18","date_gmt":"2020-12-13T13:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=299133"},"modified":"2020-12-13T15:58:21","modified_gmt":"2020-12-13T13:58:21","slug":"electoral-court-orders-election-rerun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=299133","title":{"rendered":"Electoral Court orders election rerun"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ni\u00ebl Terblanch\u00e9<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>JUDGES presiding over Namibia\u2019s Electoral Court has declared the results of the recent Local Authority elections in Stampriet, Aroab, Ko\u00ebs, and the Mariental Rural Constituency null and void and ordered a rerun of the voting process.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) approached the Electoral Court with an application court to set aside the results of the elections after it was revealed that election officials used incorrect ballot papers and that one polling point was also closed before the prescribed time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the election that took place on 25 November could not officially be declared and the results could not be certified by the ECN.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"492\" height=\"519\" src=\"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Electoral-Court-orders-election-rerun.jpg\" alt=\"Namibia Electoral Court Local Authority elections Stampriet Aroab Ko\u00ebs\" class=\"wp-image-299138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Electoral-Court-orders-election-rerun.jpg 284w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Electoral-Court-orders-election-rerun.jpg 492w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 492px) 100vw, 492px\" \/><figcaption>RERUN ORDERED: The ECN\u2019s Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer Theo Mujoro. \u2013 Photo: File<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before the application was taken to the Electoral Court the Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer of the ECN, Theo Mujoro said that the wrong ballot papers were used because the documents that were meant for other constituencies were used in the constituencies where the rerun has been ordered.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also indicated that disciplinary steps are considered against the presiding officers that neglected their duties by not ensuring that the correct ballot material is available before the elections took place.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not apply for the entire process which would include the nomination of candidates to be repeated. The application will seek an order to have a rerun of the actual voting process with the same political parties and candidates but on the correct ballot papers,\u201d he said before the application was brought before the Electoral Court last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Electoral Court issued the order to have a rerun of the elections in the four constituencies on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\"><!-- MetaSlider 271797 not found --><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":299151,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[33,24],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-299133","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-breaking-news","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.5 -
