{"id":292158,"date":"2020-06-06T09:08:16","date_gmt":"2020-06-06T07:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=292158"},"modified":"2020-06-06T09:08:18","modified_gmt":"2020-06-06T07:08:18","slug":"phase-2-of-operation-namib-desert-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=292158","title":{"rendered":"Phase 2 of Operation Namib Desert launched"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Staff Reporter<\/p>\n<p>THE second phase of the Operation Namib Desert which will see members from different branches of the Namibian security cluster combat criminal activities together was officially launched earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the launch, Inspector General of the Namibian Police, Lieutenant General Sebastian Ndeitunga said that the maintenance of law and order remains an important national obligation to ensure the safety and security of Namibians through joint crime prevention operations like Operation Namib Desert 2, which will run until 28th August 2020 with intervals after every 28 days.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Operation Namib Desert Phase will still comprise the Namibian Police Force as a lead agency, Namibia Defence Force, Namibian Correctional Service, Namibia Central Intelligence Service, Immigration, Customs &amp; Excise, Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Ministry of Works and Transport (Roads Authority &#8211; Road Transport Inspectors and National Road Safety Council), Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, Windhoek City Police Service, other local municipal authorities and other stakeholders and partners in the fight against crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"737\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Phase-2-of-Operation-Namib-Desert-launched.png\" alt=\"second phase Operation Namib Desert Namibian security cluster combat criminal activities\" class=\"wp-image-292140\" srcset=\"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Phase-2-of-Operation-Namib-Desert-launched.png 300w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Phase-2-of-Operation-Namib-Desert-launched.png 512w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Phase-2-of-Operation-Namib-Desert-launched.png 737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 737px) 100vw, 737px\" \/><figcaption>READY AND WILLING: Members from different branches of the security cluster during a parade in Walvis Bay at the start of the second phase of Operation Namib Desert. \u2013 Photo: Ni\u00ebl Terblanch\u00e9<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ndeitunga stated that current crime statistics suggest that alcohol and drug abuse could be the most contributing factor(s) to the escalation of crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the State of Emergency period, more specifically during the lockdown period, crimes such as murder, attempted murder, culpable homicide, rape, armed robbery (with a firearm), assault GBH have generally reduced.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The reduction of crime is attributed to among others, intense police visibility during both the &#8220;Operation curb COVID-19&#8221; and &#8220;Operation Namib Desert phase I&#8221; countrywide which ran simultaneously except in very few areas.
