AROUND seventy thousand Namibians countrywide consisting mainly of senior citizen are still using the old identity cards from the former South West Africa (SWA).<\/p>\n

Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration spokesperson, Sakeus Kadhikwa, yesterday said the SWA IDs used by Namibians prior to the country\u2019s independence are still valid because their invalidity is still not yet gazette, but that people using them should still update them.<\/p>\n

Kadhikwa noted that the update was necessitated by the fact that some institutions are no longer accepting the SWA identification documents, and this may be due to previous reports in the media that these documents were going to be de-gazetted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe public is informed that the SWA IDs remain valid identity documents until they are de-gazetted by the Minister of Home Affairs and Immigration,\u201d said Kadhikwa.<\/p>\n

The SWA ID cards were introduced in 1979, and administered under the SWA Act 37 of 1970 and Identification of Persons Act 2 of 1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
