Housebreaking suspects known as “Panga Group” arrested

Marthina Mutanga

A WELL_KNOWN group of men suspected of breaking into houses with the intentions of harming and robbing the owners were recently arrested in Windhoek.

Police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi, said the group was arrested on 25 October and appeared in court, but an identification parade identified the men as the same group that has been carrying out a reign of terror in the capital and were denied bail.

Kanguatjivi noted that the same group attacked a certain Uazuva Kaumbi in front of his house in Rocky Crest while he was opening his gate.

“All four of them are in custody for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and housebreaking. Bail was denied and they will appear in court again on 12 March 2020, said Kanguatjivi.

The suspects include Erastus “Amin” Shipepe, 35, Festus Shaanika, 28, Ndilipunye Elia, 30, and Benjamin Andjendja, 29.

Kanguatjivi further reported that cases of housebreaking are on the increase and cautioned people to be vigilant and to form neighbourhood watches in their areas.

“This will make it easier to alert each other and the police of all suspicious activities in the area,” he said.

He also appealed to property owners not to leave their houses or garage doors open as thieves are always on the move.

Kanguatjivi assured the public that the police will continue doing patrons in especially high crime areas and urged the public to make use of the police tollfree number when they witness suspicious movement in their residential areas.
