TWO men, who out of civic duty, tried to apprehend dangerous criminal, also known as Tjireja, are fighting for their lives in hospital after they suffered severe stab wounds during their attempt.
The spontaneous act of heroism occurred during the early hours of Sunday morning at the Funny Game 2 Bar in Cassamba Street in the Otjomuise residential area of Windhoek.
According to the report about the attack provided by the Public Relations Division of the Namibian Police the two men along with a third accosted Tjireja, who is wanted on a charge of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, in an attempt to affect a citizen’s arrest.
A scuffle ensued and the wanted criminal used a knife to stab the three men who tried to apprehend him.
According to the report the stabbing led to an all out mob fight in the bar and by the time police officers arrived the brawl was out of control. Officers attending the scene fired a warning shot to disperse the brawling bar patrons.
In the confusion Tjireja managed to evade arrest by running off into the darkness.
The police officers assisted the two severely wounded men and their companion who sustained less serious stab wounds and took them to hospital where they still are in a critical condition. The third victim has since been discharged from hospital.
The suspect was arrested later during Sunday and charged with two counts of attempted murder and an additional charge of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
