THE finance ministry has announced that it will not renew the contracts of healthcare service providers who are refusing to treat patients with the Public Service Employees Medical Aid Scheme (PSEMAS) due to outstanding payments.

During a meeting today between the ministry of finance and healthcare service providers, finance minister Calle Schlettwein stated that the current difficulties in payments is an issue that needs immediate resolution as government is constantly receiving threats from service providers that they will stop treating civil servants using PSEMAS.

Liz Kharuxas, Executive Director of PSEMAS, noted that doctors have taken an oath to uphold specific standards, and healthcare service providers should uphold those standards by treating all patients that enter their private practices, whether they are using PSEMAS or other medical aid schemes.

She added that the dishonesty from service providers will result in an investigation and all payments would be suspended during such investigations, while a disqualification clause will also be enacted for service providers that have been found guilty of fraud.
