THE 52-year-old Mathias Nerumbu died instantly when the Hyundai sedan he was driving struck a kudu and collided head-on with an oncoming Opel Corsa on the road between Outjo and Otjiwarongo.
According to an eyewitness of the tragic accident on Saturday evening, the driver of the Opel Corsa light utility vehicle was driving in the direction of Outjo when the crash occurred.
Wouter Snyman said he was driving a truck in the same direction when the small bakkie pulled onto the road in front of him.

“The person was driving quite slowly and I was getting ready to overtake when I saw the other car coming from the opposite direction. It was moving at high speed and the next moment I saw a flash of grey on the road and the oncoming car striking an animal.”
Snyman said the driver of the Hyundai lost control and veered into the lane of the bakkie before crashing into it.
“The impact must have been quite severe because some of the wreckage from both the cars struck my truck and I was quite a distance behind them.”
Snyman said after bringing the truck to a standstill next to the road, he approached the wrecks of the cars and saw that the driver of the Huyndai was already dead. He then went to see about the people in the bakkie and saw only the injured driver.
“The man was badly hurt and after talking to him I heard another voice from the other car. It was the wife of the deceased person and she was stuck inside the wreck. I called the emergency services and when they arrived I helped the people to get the survivors out of the wrecks and to safety.”
The police in the Otjozondjupa Region confirmed the name of the deceased and said that the wife and the driver of the small pick-up both sustained serious injuries and were transferred to the Katutura Intermediate Hospital in Windhoek they still are in critical condition.
On Sunday evening three people died on the spot after a head on collision between a sedan vehicle and a government bakkie in the area of Omaalala between Ondangwa and Ongwediva.
A fourth person sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital for further stabilisation and care.
The actual cause of the crash is not yet known while the names of the deceased victims have not been known yet.
