President Hage Geingob directed that a period of national mourning will be observed in honour of the late former Vice President, Dr. Nickey Iyambo.
President Geingob declared Dr. Iyambo as a National Hero and directed further that a state funeral be held in his honour at Heroes Acre.
According to a statement issued by State House the declaration and conferment was done in terms of Sub-Article (8) of Article 32 of the Namibian Constitution, and under the powers vested in the President by Sub- Article (3)(h) of that Article read with section 3(1) and 4 of the Conferment of National Honours Act, 2012 (Act No. 11 of 2012).
Following consultations with the wife and family of the late Dr. Iyambo, the President directed that Dr. Iyambo’s remains be interred at the National Heroes Acre in Windhoek on Saturday, 1 June 2019.
A memorial service will also be held in honour of Dr. Iyambo on 31 May 2019 at Parliament Gardens.
President Geingob directed that a period of national mourning be observed in honour of the late former Vice President during which all flags in Namibia will be flown at half-mast with effect from Wednesday, 29 May 2019 to Saturday, 1 June 2019.
President Geingob described Dr. Iyambo as a father, comrade, friend and mentor who leaves behind a rich legacy of loyal service to the Namibian people.
“With the departure of Comrade Nickey, the nation has lost a freedom fighter and a leader with deep humane values,” Dr. Geingob said.
President Geingob again conveyed his sincere condolences to the wife, children, family, comrades and friends.
