Epatululo massacre accused goes mute

THE 26-year-old Sam Nauyoma Petrus, who stands accused of massacring his mother, his brother and one of his nieces at the Epatululo Village last week, continued with his strange behaviour when he made his second appearance in the Ohangwena Magistrate’s Court earlier on Monday.

People gathered in the public gallery of the courtroom were again dumbfounded by the behaviour of the accused person when he was apparently turned into a mute and not able to speak or answer any questions put to him by the magistrate during court proceedings.

The strange behaviour of the accused person continued despite the fact that he was sent for medical treatment last Thursday after he made his first appearance in the court while he was apparently unconscious. At the time Petrus had to be carried into the court room by members of the Namibian Police.

When asked about the peculiar behaviour of the accused person, State Prosecutor Sacky Mupuma, indicated to Magistrate Mwilima Mwilima that Petrus was taken to the Engela Hospital for a medical check up as ordered by the court last Thursday.

“Physically there is nothing wrong with the accused person, but the doctor who examined him suggested that he be sent for mental observation,” Mupuma informed the court.

When it was established during the court proceedings that the accused person was able to understand what was transpiring around him, he was formally informed of the charges and his rights with regards to legal representation. He was informed that he faces three counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of malicious damage to property. Petrus also faces a charge of cruelty to animals.

Before remanding the accused person in custody until 30 January 2020 Magistrate Mwilima ordered that Petrus be allowed the opportunity to apply for a state sponsored legal representative.

During the attack in the Opatulula Village last Tuesday morning, Petrus hacked his 61-year-old mother Vilgenia Teofelus, his 30-year-old brother Simon Petrus and his one-year-old niece Ndapandula Hafeni to death with a panga in their homestead. After killing three of his family members and seriously injuring another of his nieces he also killed seven goats and a dog.
