England first to book place in semi-finals

Staff Reporter

A RESOLUTE England nailed down their spot in the semi-final round of the 2019 Rugby World Cup for the first time in 12 years by beating Australia with 40 – 16.

Two first-half tries from Jonny May on his 50th cap helped establish a 17 – 9 half-time lead before a sensational score from Marika Koroibete brought the score for the Wallabies to within a single point difference.

But prop Kyle Sinckler smashed through from Owen Farrell’s pass which gave England control of the match again. The English fly-half relentlessly landed 20 points with his boot to crush Australian hopes. Anthony Watson applied the coup de grace with a late try from an intercept.

To date the victory over Australia was England’s best performance of a World Cup when they have seldom been tested.

Four years ago England were sent packing at the group stage from the tournament they were hosting by the Wallabies.

England now faces a semi-final meeting with either New Zealand or Ireland in a week’s time. The order of next week’s play will be determined by the result of second quarter-final match of the day.
