THE Springboks shattered the dreams of the host nation of the 2019 Rugby World Cup with a 26 – 3 victory and will go on to play in the tournament’s semi-final stage against Wales.
South Africa took the lead early after a powerful run by Makazole Mapimpi resulted in a try, but their momentum was interrupted when Tendai Mtawarira was shown a yellow card.
Japan could only take a three pointer from a penalty while they had the advantage of an extra man on the field and the first half ended with South Africa leading 5 -3 at half-time.
Second-half tries from Faf de Klerk and Mapimpi in conjunction with Handre Pollard’s 11 points with the boot put the Springboks out of reach.
The emotional loss for the Japanese players brought an abrupt end to wonderful run in the tournament for the hosts who earned the respect of the rugby world with their performance during the pool stage.
The Springboks will now play Wales in the semi-final in a week’s time on 27 October.
