Elderly man commits suicide in retirement village

A PENSIONER from Swakopmund, the 77-year-old Manfred Mai’s lifeless body was discovered by his wife upon her return home from the shops in town at the start of the weekend.

According to the official police report about the tragic incident provided by the Erongo Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the elderly man, who shot himself, stays in a retirement village in Swakopmund with his wife. He was alone at home when he committed suicide.
“When the wife returned home from shopping, the house was locked from inside. She told investigators that she knocked on the door but got no response. She eventually managed to open the door and found the deceased in the bathroom of the house with a pistol in his right hand.”
According to the report the elderly man shot himself in the head with the fire arm. No foul play is suspected although the deceased person did not leave a suicide note.
The elderly man’s remains were taken to the Walvis Bay Police mortuary for a post-mortem exam to confirm the actual cause of death.
