ALLEGATIONS that a senior official of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) in the Oshana Region was simultaneously a Swapo Party branch coordinator almost derailed a recent stakeholders meeting at Oshakati.
The commotion started when representatives of opposition parties noticed that the ECN official who was chairing the meeting on Thursday last week, was none other than Modestus Evaristus, Swapo’s coordinator for the Amutanga branch in the Okatana constituency.
Evaristus is the ECN’s Assistant Coordinator for the Oshana Region.
A mass walkout was only averted at last minute when Evaristus was forced not only to vacate the chair but also to leave the gathering altogether.
The gathering was addressing the supplementary registration of voters for the upcoming presidential and national assembly elections which is scheduled to take place from the 8th to the 27th of this month.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the ruling Swapo party, the Congress of Democrats (CoD), Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF), the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) and the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) as well as other stakeholders.
Evaristus refused to comment, limiting himself to saying that the issue is being dealt with at the highest levels of the ECN.
ECN spokesperson Vikitoria Hango was not available for comment.
