NAMIBIA took their first M1 Nations Cup title after beating host nation, Singapore by 49 – 42 in the final match of the tournament earlier today.
According to the Straits time the Namibian ladies, who went through the initial stages of the tournament unbeaten, had the host nation under pressure from the very start of the match.
Namibia, ranked 33rd in the world, overwhelmed Singapore, ranked at 28 and ended the first quarter of the match with an 11 – 10 lead. The host nation bounced back in the second quarter to go into half-time with a 25 – 20 lead.
But the Desert Jewels drew level at 33 – 33 in the crucial third quarter, thanks to their tight defence and the efforts of their unstoppable goal shooter Jaumbuaije Zauana, before pulling away in the final period for the victory.
The teams played the opening match of the tournament which ended in a 54-54 draw.
Singapore took second place while the Cook Islands came in third after beating Botswana 49 – 46. Ireland beat Papua New Guinea by 47 – 37 to finish fifth.
