THE Namibian Police has launched a countrywide manhunt for the 28-year-old Anthony Lelle Stramiss who escaped form lawful custody after he was convicted on charges of aiding another person to escape from lawful custody, defeating the course of justice and assault.
Stramiss was free on bail until he was convicted on the charges in the Usakos Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
According to the Erongo Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, after Stramiss was convicted, the presiding magistrate ordered that his bail be cancelled and that he should be remanded in custody to await sentencing on the charges at his next appearance on 22 May this year.
The charges against Stramiss stem from an incident in August 2018 where he attempted to help Gotfried Korner, a murder suspect, to escape from the back of a police van.
According to officials at the Usakos Magistrate’s Court, Korner is the suspect in an ongoing murder case in Usakos. Korner was freed on bail and one of the conditions attached to his bail was that he would not visit Usakos while the matter was still under police investigation as he might interfere with witnesses.
Korner, who moved to Windhoek for the time being, violated the conditions of his bail and returned to Usakos in August 2018. The murder suspect was reported to the police and upon his arrest, Stramiss was found in his company but was not taken into custody. He attempted to help Korner escape by opening the police van.
In the ensuing scuffle with police officers, Stramiss also managed to accrue a charge of assaulting a police officer and he was arrested. He was later freed on bail.
“After Stramiss was convicted on the charges he faced and court proceedings ended, he managed to flee from court by evading police officers,” Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu said.
He said that the suspect hails from Swakopmund but is known to have family in Windhoek.
Any person that knows the whereabouts of Stramiss or have information that might lead to his arrest is kindly requested to contact Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu at 081 246 4757, Sargeant Julius at 081 301 3988 or report relevant information at the nearest Police Station.
