The seven-year-old Annastasia Tilomalenga Kampulu, who committed suicide in Walvis Bay by hanging herself on a wardrobe on 17 January, was laid to rest in the Uukwandongo village cemetery in the Okahao constituency of Omusati region on Saturday.
Both the memorial and funeral services were held at the deceased’s grandmother’s traditional homestead in the Okangala village on Friday and Saturday respectively.
The police reported that Annastasia – a Grade 2 learner at the Emmanuel Reuters Primary School in Kuisebmond – committed suicide while she was alone in a locked house while her mother Annastasia Oscar went to attend a night-time church service at around 18:00.
She only returned during the earlier morning hours the next day and found her daughter’s lifeless body hanging on a wardrobe with a headscarf around her neck.
The police at Walvis Bay said that no foul play is suspected.
However, villagers and some relatives who spoke to Informante expressed shock and disbelief. They said they want to know what really transpired and are asking the police to dig deeper.
