IN light of cancer awareness week that is commemorated during the first week of August, the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) released statistics that revealed that during the last seven years, cases of all types of cancer ever recorded in the country has reached 3,665.
In the report, CAN mentioned that the number has increased over the years and in 2016, the figure stood at 3,640 cases.

According to the association, there are over 200 regularly defined different types of cancer, all of which are characterised by abnormal cell growth.
“If left untreated, this disease can lead to death,” the report reads.
The report further stated that cancer cells could spread when they migrate to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems, forming new tumours.
“This process is called metastasis. Even when cancer spreads, it is always named based on where it first occurred. For instance, cancer that begins in the breast is called breast cancer. If it spreads to other parts of the body, like the liver or bone, it is called metastatic breast cancer. With so many different cancers, it is important for you to know which type of cancer you have so that you can receive the right treatment,” said CAN.
CAN urged the public to watch out for any cancer symptoms around their bodies.
“All people have the right to access proven and effective cancer treatments and services on equal terms. In Namibia, cancer patients can contact the Cancer Association of Namibia to assist them and guide them to the correct medical assistance,” the public was urged.
