A WINDHOEK businessman was found guilty of fatally shooting his girlfriend and attempting to kill a man, who he suspected to have been cheating with the deceased.
High Court Judge Naomi Shivute found that Sakarias Mathias,57, acted with direct intent when he murdered Magdalena Fredericks, 21, at his bar in 2014 in a fit of jealousy. He was further found guilty of the illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and attempting to defeat the course of Justice.
In relation to the attempted murder charge, he fired shots at Patrick Hawala and wounded him in the thigh.
Mathias attempted to cover his tracks by hiding the pistol he used in the commission of the offense. His N$5 000 bail was therefore suspended and he has since been remanded in custody.
He will return to court next week for the submission of arguments of mitigation and aggravation before he will be sentenced.
The convicted person is represented by Trevor Brockerhoff and the state is represented by Palmer Khumalo.
