AN Australian tourist visiting Namibia died after he was trampled to death by an elephant while camping next to the Huab River in the Kunene Region earlier on Thursday.
Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) spokesperson, Romeo Muyunda confirmed the incident and said that the 59-year-old man was part of a group of people who camped on the banks of the Huab River.
Muyunda described the incident as ‘highly regrettable and unfortunate’, but maintained that it has been established that the area in which the group of tourists were camping is not a designated camping site.
“Investigations into the matter by both the Namibian Police and the MET will continue. Among other things we also want to establish if the tourists were guided by a tour guide. The Ministry wishes to reiterate our call to our very welcome tourists to always be cautious and observe rules and regulations put in place for their safety,” he stressed.
Muyunda further expressed condolences to bereaved family and friends of the deceased, on the Ministry’s behalf.
