THE Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) is gearing up for more exciting games that are sure to keep football fans at the edge of their seas as the round of 16 matches unfolds tonight, with Morocco against Mali kicking things off.
One of the competition’s favourites to win the trophy, the Atlas Lions of Morocco, is one of three North African countries that qualified with a perfect record from their group games.
The other two are Algeria and host nation, Egypt.
Benin, on the other hand, made the knockout stage as one of four spots given to the third best-placed teams in the tournament.
Later in the evening, Sadio Mane’s Senegal will square off against Uganda for a chance in the quarterfinals.
Teranga Lions of Senegal come up against East Africa’s only remaining representatives, the Cranes of Uganda, which is also placed second in its group – beating DR Congo, drawing with Zimbabwe and losing to Egypt.
Saturday games: Egypt vs. South Africa and Nigeria vs. Cameroon.
Sunday: Madagascar vs. DR Congo and Algeria vs. Guinea.
