A NATION is in mourning on all social media platforms after the tragic death of two Grade 7 learners from the Windhoek Gymnasium, Angela Maiba and Jacques Venter during a bus accident between Mariental and Klakrand earlier on Sunday morning.
Shock waves hit the nation on the eve of Heroes’ Day with the news that the bus driver was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance, reckless and negligent driving and culpable homicide. Despite the seriousness of the incident the driver did not sustain any serious injuries and is currently in the police holding cells at Mariental.
The Executive Head of Curro Holdings, Colette Rieckert, issued a statement in which she said the accident resulted in the loss of the lives of two of the school’s learners and serious injuries to others.
“Learners were transported by an external service provider, and the bus driver was not an employee of Windhoek Gymnasium or Curro Holdings. Curro Holdings sees the situation in an extremely serious light and will leave no stone unturned to assist the police in their investigations.”
Rieckert said in her statement more information about the tragic incident will be supplied as it becomes available.
The Namibian Police indicated that the arrested driver will in all probability make his first appearance on the charges in the Mariental Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
