THE Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture has released the 2027 calendar for government schools, with learners starting the school year on 13 January, scheduled for 197 school days across three terms and concluding the academic year on 8 December.
The first term will begin on Wednesday, 13 January for learners, while teachers will report on Monday, 11 January. The term will include a mid-term break from 23 to 25 March and end on 28 April, giving learners 70 school days.
The second term will start on Tuesday, 1 June and end on Tuesday, 24 August, with 61 school days. Teachers will report on Monday, 31 May and conclude the term on Wednesday, 25 August.
The Day of the African Child will be commemorated on Wednesday, 16 June.
The third term will begin on Tuesday, 7 September and end on Wednesday, 8 December, with 66 school days. Teachers will report on Monday, 6 September and conclude their duties on Thursday, 9 December.
The Day of the Namibian Child will be commemorated on Tuesday, 28 September, while Tuesday, 5 October will be observed as a school holiday for World Teachers’ Day.
The first school day for learners in 2028 is provisionally set for Wednesday, 12 January, while teachers are expected to return on Monday, 10 January.
The ministry also released the 2027 hostel calendar, with hostel learners scheduled for a total of 270 days.
For the first term, hostels will open on Tuesday, 12 January for learners and close on Wednesday, 28 April. The term includes a home weekend on 26 February and a mid-term break from 19 to 29 March.
The second hostel term will run from 31 May to 24 August for learners, with a home weekend on 2 July. Hostel staff and supervisory teachers will report from 30 May and conclude the term on 25 August.
The third hostel term will begin on 6 September and end on 8 December for learners, with a home weekend on 1 October. Hostel staff and supervisory teachers will conclude the term on 9 December.
The ministry said the provisional opening date for hostels in 2028 is 11 January for learners, while hostel staff and supervisory teachers will report on 10 January.
The ministry encouraged parents, learners and educators to take note of the key dates and said the optimum utilisation of school time is essential for success.
