NAMIBIAN learners Guillermo Melando and Thobias Gabriel have won silver and bronze medals respectively at the 46th Eskom Expo International Science Fair in Johannesburg, South Africa, where young scientists and innovators from 11 countries showcased research and technological innovations.

The fair was held from 28 September to 2 October 2026 and brought together 323 young scientists, innovators and problem-solvers from South Africa and international delegations.

Melando won a silver medal in Agricultural Sciences, while Gabriel received a bronze medal in Engineering.

Namibia’s participation was led by the National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST), in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC), with sponsorship support from the NamPower Foundation.

The initiative provides Namibian learners with opportunities to showcase their research and innovations and participate in international science and technology platforms.

The NCRST congratulated Melando and Gabriel on their achievements and praised the Namibian team for representing the country on the international stage.

The commission also thanked the NamPower Foundation for sponsoring Namibia’s participation and supporting efforts to promote science, technology and innovation among Namibian youth.

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair is South Africa’s premier youth science competition and exhibition, providing learners with a platform to present original research in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation.

The international fair is the final stage of a competition process involving district and regional workshops. In 2026, it featured local finalists and international participants from countries including Brazil, Ireland, India, China and Russia.

Participants presented research projects across various disciplines and competed for bursaries, prizes and international recognition.

The fair also provides young innovators with opportunities to interact with government officials and industry experts. The prize pool is valued at approximately R9 million and includes university bursaries and specialised research opportunities.

The event also recognises excellence in mentorship through the National Mentor Winner award.

Hosted at the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre, the fair includes a public exhibition where participating learners display their research projects.

The initiative is supported by South Africa’s Department of Science, Technology and Innovation as part of efforts to promote scientific engagement among young people.
