PRESIDENT Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez have discussed the ongoing negotiations on the WHO Pandemic Agreement, with Namibia highlighting Africa’s priorities on equitable access to vaccines, stronger regional response capacity and preparedness for future health emergencies.
The two leaders held discussions on the margins of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, where they also explored opportunities to deepen bilateral cooperation and advance areas of mutual interest.
Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted Namibia’s role in the African Group negotiations, including the leadership of the Ministry of Health and Social Services in key areas of the negotiating process.
She underscored the importance of equitable and timely access to vaccines and other medical countermeasures, as well as stronger regional response capacity, greater decentralisation of resources and improved preparedness for future health emergencies.
Both sides emphasised the importance of maintaining political momentum alongside the technical negotiations and agreed to remain engaged as efforts continue towards reaching consensus on the outstanding issues surrounding the agreement.
