Steenkamp inaugurates new UNAM Council

THE Minister of Education, Dr Sanet Steenkamp, has inaugurated the University of Namibia’s (UNAM) Council, which will be responsible for providing strategic direction, ensuring good governance and overseeing the institution’s affairs.

“As Council, your role is to provide strategic leadership, sound governance and effective oversight, while respecting the important distinction between governance and management,” Steenkamp said, speaking at the inaugural meeting.

She explained that the Council must provide direction, safeguard the integrity and sustainability of the institution, oversee the responsible use of resources, monitor performance and hold management accountable. However, she added, the University’s management must also be given the authority and space to manage the University effectively within the powers properly delegated to it.

“Good governance does not mean governing every operational decision. Equally, effective management cannot mean operating without accountability. The relationship between Council and management must therefore be built on clarity, mutual respect, constructive challenge and accountability,” Steenkamp said.

She further urged Council members to engage in robust debate, allowing them to ask difficult questions, challenge assumptions and express differing views, while keeping the interests of the institution and the public above individual interests.

“Once a decision has been properly taken, however, there must also be unity of purpose in implementing that decision,” she said.

The newly appointed members include Wilhencia Uiras, who will serve as Chairperson of the Council, and Mbakumua Hengari, who will serve as Vice-Chairperson of the Council. The rest of the Council members are Oscar Capelao, Mbumba E. Haitengela, I-Ben Natangwe Nashandi, Werner Hamata, Baronice Rashida Hans, Dr Licky Erastus, Paulina Elago, Prof. Dr Mpho Ngoepe, Prof. Dr Kenneth Matengu, Dr Joseph Ndinoshiho, Prof. Dr Ellen Ndeshi Namhila, Enrico Simataa Goseb, Prof. Dr Alfons Mosimane and Lovisa I. Amon.

“You have been entrusted with the governance of an institution that belongs not only to those who study and work here, but to the Namibian nation. The University of Namibia has a vital role to play in educating our young people, advancing knowledge, developing skills, driving research and innovation, and preparing the human capital required for our country’s future,” Steenkamp added.
