NamWater issues water shortage alert for one of the key dams supplying central areas

THE Namibia Water Corporation Ltd (NamWater) has issued an urgent water shortage alert for Omatako Dam, which supplies water to central areas such as Windhoek and Okahandja.

Lot Ndamanomhata, NamWater spokesperson, said that NamWater urgently informs all customers, stakeholders and communities supplied through the Omatako–Von Bach Pipeline that the water level in Omatako Dam has reached a critically low level and the available water for abstraction is nearing depletion.

“NamWater is currently abstracting the last remaining accessible water from the dam. Based on current conditions, this remaining supply may only be available for approximately one to two weeks. However, this timeframe cannot be guaranteed, as pumping may cease earlier if the water level falls below the safe abstraction point,” Ndamanomhata said.

He added that once the remaining accessible water is depleted, NamWater will no longer be able to supply water from Omatako Dam through the Omatako–Von Bach Pipeline.

“This may result in a complete interruption of water supply to affected customers and communities. All affected customers and stakeholders are therefore urgently requested to make the necessary preparations and contingency arrangements in anticipation of a possible water supply interruption in the coming days or weeks,” Ndamanomhata said.
