A SERIES of veld fires broke out in and around Kalkfeld this week, burning for several days and destroying thousands of hectares of land.
The fires were reportedly sparked by lightning, with the first blaze starting west of Kalkfeld on Tuesday. It burned throughout the night, destroying approximately 2,500 hectares. On Wednesday, lightning strikes reportedly ignited additional fires in several areas in the vicinity.
The worst-affected areas were reportedly on the farms Sandputz, Oujaar, Radio, Okakumangua, Oviraura and Osoguruquena.
Strong winds further intensified the fires and hampered firefighting efforts. Several farmers in the area joined the efforts to bring the fires under control, which took several days before the blazes were eventually extinguished.
The full extent of the damage caused by the fires is not yet known.
