Mob justice not the answer, says Nampol after store assault incident

Staff Reporter

TAKING the law into your own hands is illegal — everyone knows it. But growing frustration with crime has pushed some residents to do it anyway.

A video clip circulating this week shows employees of a store assaulting at least three suspected shoplifters.

Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi said such actions are strictly prohibited.

“Community members are fully aware that taking the law into their own hands is against the law. Yet some still do exactly that, citing fatigue with endless criminal activities,” she said.

According to her, assaulting suspects not only undermines the justice system but also exposes those involved to criminal charges.

The police have persistently urged the public to report crimes to the police and allow due process to take its course, instead of resorting to mob justice.

The police could not confirm whether any common assault cases have been registered.
