UPDATE: The Municipal Council of the City of Windhoek has said that it has resumed firefighting operations this morning after a fire broke out on the mountain near Daan Viljoen.
The City’s Emergency Services responded to the fire and found that strong south-westerly winds were pushing the flames towards the Daan Viljoen Game Reserve.
Firefighting efforts were suspended due to strong winds, thick vegetation and extensive fire lines, which made conditions unsafe for crews to continue operating at night.

Lydia Amutenya, the City of Windhoek’s spokesperson, said that operations have, however, resumed this morning.
“A team of firefighters is currently on the ground assessing conditions, monitoring fire behaviour and determining the most effective containment strategy. Initial assessment indicates that the fire remains deep within the mountain terrain and is not currently threatening any properties. In some areas, the fire is no longer active, while monitoring continues in areas where hotspots remain. At this stage, there is no cause for panic,” Amutenya said.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to remain vigilant, exercise caution and immediately report any danger to lives or structures to the Fire Brigade on 061 211 111 for an immediate response.
