THE small settlement of Omitara in the Omaheke Region has been left with more questions than answers following the murder of a nine-month-old baby who was discovered on Saturday morning.
Imelda #Nuses explained that her daughter, Namtani Loretta #Nuses, was taken from bed while she had been sleeping next to her four-year-old brother, and added that she is yet to come to terms with the tragedy.
#Nuses explained that she had returned home around 22:00 on Friday night, and had woken up around 04:00 to have a smoke but did not have a lighter and subsequently went to a neighbour’s home to get one. She added that when she returned a few minutes later, her baby girl was not there.
After this, she added that she went to the neighbours’ homes and frantically searched for her baby.
“I thought that someone had taken her after hearing her cry, and went to a house where they were doing a funeral service,” #Nuses said.
Alred #Nuseb, the 49-year-old uncle of Imelda #Nuses, said he works as a security guard and had returned home around 06:00. He added that after this, he was woken up by his relatives and was told that his niece’s baby had gone missing.
He added that upon arriving at his niece’s home, he asked Imelda what had happened, and that she had said that the baby had been taken but that they could not find her.
“After that I went inside her house. She had covered some shoe prints in the home with a bucket. I analysed it and thereafter followed the shoe prints outside,” #Nuseb said.
He added that he followed the said footprints to a fence alongside the highway. That was around 08:00.
They had tried calling the police around 04:00, but the police had not shown up, Alfred said.
He added that alongside the highway there was a fence, which they crossed, and that after walking for about 30 minutes they noticed a piece of cloth on a bush.
Alfred said that the baby had been thrown into the bush and was tied with a cloth around her mouth and wrapped in thick winter clothing.
He added that after the discovery, he had walked for around three kilometres to find a car to go and find the police.
