AT LEAST 22 people have died and several others were injured after a long-distance bus collided with a three-wheeled motorcycle carrying fuel near Sumbe in Angola’s Cuanza-Sul Province.
According to Angolan police, the violent impact caused the fuel on the tricycle to explode. The resulting fire quickly engulfed both vehicles.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Monday while a Macon bus was travelling from Luanda to Lubango, the Jornal de Angola newspaper reported.
The injured were initially taken to Sumbe General Hospital. However, four people with severe injuries, including the bus driver, were later airlifted by an Air Force helicopter to Luanda’s Julius Nyerere Hospital, which specialises in burn treatment, Novo Jornal reported.
Police said the number of fatalities may rise as investigations continue.
There has been speculation that some Namibian “Order-With-Me” traders may have been among the bus passengers, but this has not been confirmed by authorities.
