A RESIDENT of the Oneshila informal settlement in Oshakati lost his shotgun, which was “concealed” in a large plastic bag — locally known as a mwaudako.
The bag was misplaced by a taxi driver.
The trouble started when a passenger reached his destination. The cab stopped and the driver grabbed a bag from the boot and put it on the ground, thinking it belonged to that particular passenger.
He then drove on, but a short distance later, another passenger got off and reached for his luggage. That was when the driver realised that he had given the wrong bag to the wrong person.
He immediately turned the taxi around and drove back to the first drop-off point. However, both the passenger and the bag had vanished.
To make matters worse, inside the mwaudako was more than just clothes. The passenger had folded his shotgun and packed it in the bag.
The incident was reported to the police on the same day, but so far neither the passenger who received the bag nor the shotgun has been traced.
Namibians are, under the Arms and Ammunition Act, allowed to travel with legally owned firearms, provided they follow strict rules, such as ensuring that the firearm cannot be loaded or displayed openly in public spaces.
The Oneshila gun owner, the taxi driver and members of the community are now hoping that the person who ended up with the bag will come forward.
