THE Swakopmund Municipality is set to upgrade the town’s municipal waste disposal facility as part of plans to establish a more formalised landfill site.
“The project consists of adjusting and upgrading the existing waste disposal facility to allow for the continued disposal of municipal solid waste at the current site. The upgrade will include the development of a more formalised landfill facility, with supporting infrastructure such as internal roads, access control, a weighbridge area, office and storage areas, recycling and composting areas, stormwater management infrastructure, and provision for future landfill extensions,” the Swakopmund Municipality explained.
The municipality assured that the facility will continue to receive solid waste generated within the Swakopmund Municipality’s jurisdiction.
“Waste disposed of at the facility includes domestic waste, commercial waste, demolition waste, garden waste, and non-toxic industrial waste. Hazardous and toxic waste is not permitted to be disposed of at the Swakopmund Municipality waste disposal facility and must be transported to an approved hazardous waste disposal facility,” the Swakopmund Municipality said.
Geo Pollution Technologies (Pty) Ltd has been appointed by the municipality to undertake an environmental assessment for the proposed upgrade. As part of the assessment process, interested and affected parties are invited to submit comments, concerns, or any relevant information relating to the project.
Members of the public wishing to participate may register as interested and affected parties with Geo Pollution Technologies.
