EUROPEAN heavyweights France and Spain will battle for a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final when they meet in a highly anticipated semi-final clash at Dallas Stadium tonight at 21:00 Namibia time.
France are aiming to reach a third consecutive World Cup final, but face a confident Spain side that arrives as the reigning European champions and one of the tournament’s most impressive teams.
Didier Deschamps’ France have enjoyed a dominant campaign, winning all three of their group-stage matches against Senegal, Iraq and Norway before defeating Sweden in the Round of 32. Les Bleus overcame a determined Paraguay side in the Round of 16 before producing another strong performance to eliminate Morocco 2-0 in the quarter-finals.
Spain, meanwhile, have grown stronger throughout the tournament after a slow start. Following a surprise goalless draw against Cabo Verde in their opening Group H match, La Roja secured top spot in the group with victories over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay before progressing past Austria in the Round of 32. They then relied on late goals from substitute Mikel Merino to overcome Portugal and Belgium in the knockout rounds.
France’s attacking threat has been led by Kylian Mbappe, who has scored eight goals at this year’s tournament and has an impressive record of 20 goals in 20 World Cup appearances. The 27-year-old forward is supported by a talented attacking unit that includes Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola.
Defensively, France have also been among the tournament’s strongest teams, conceding only twice so far. Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba have formed a solid partnership at the back, while Manu Kone and Adrien Rabiot provide balance in midfield.
Spain, appearing in only their third World Cup semi-final, will look to their technically gifted midfield trio of Rodri, Pedri and Dani Olmo to control possession. Goalkeeper Unai Simon has conceded just once in the tournament, with Aymeric Laporte and Pau Cubarsi providing stability in defence.
La Roja also possess significant attacking quality through players such as Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal.
The match adds another chapter to a growing rivalry between the two nations, with Spain having won their previous two meetings against France, including a 2-1 victory in the UEFA EURO 2024 semi-final and a 5-4 win in the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League.
Mbappe said France were aware of the challenge ahead but remained confident.
“We’re in the semi-finals and we’re very happy, but there’s still a long way to go. We realise that what lies ahead is even tougher than what we’ve been through, but we’re ready to face anything,” he said.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente described the encounter as a match of the highest level.
“It’s a hugely demanding match. It’s a semi-final. I’ve said it could be the World Cup final, but then again, the match between Argentina and England would be another World Cup final. We’re the top four in the FIFA rankings,” he said.
Spain youngster Lamine Yamal added: “It’s the most important match I’m ever going to play. And I’m glad to have made it this far. We’re all really excited.”
France midfielder Adrien Rabiot said the team would focus on Spain as a whole rather than only targeting Yamal.
“There is no anti-Yamal plan. We are focused on the Spanish team as a whole, not on one specific player,” he said.
The winner of the semi-final will advance to the World Cup final on 19 July at New York New Jersey Stadium.
