THE City of Windhoek has urged residents and businesses to refrain from illegal water connections, warning that offenders could face fines, legal action or imprisonment.
“The City of Windhoek reminds all residents and businesses that illegal water connections are unlawful and strictly prohibited. Residents should therefore refrain from this practice or face the consequences,” the municipality said.
According to the City, illegal water connections include linking properties to the municipal water supply without approval, tampering with or bypassing municipal water meters, reconnecting water services after they have been disconnected by the municipality, and unlawfully extending water supplies to neighbouring properties.
The municipality said anyone found guilty of these offences will have their water supply disconnected immediately and may be fined up to N$1,000. They will also be liable for back charges based on estimated water consumption, as well as investigation, repair and administrative costs, in accordance with Clause 11 of the Water Supply Regulations.
The City further warned that offenders could face prosecution under Clause 74 of the Water Supply Regulations, which provides for a fine of up to N$2,000 or imprisonment for a period of up to six months upon conviction.
