AGRICULTURE graduates continue to record the highest unemployment rate among all fields of study in the country, with almost half remaining unemployed.
“Graduates from the agriculture field of learning have the highest levels of unemployment, at 47%. This has been the case for many years,” revealed the Deputy Executive Director of the National Council for Higher Education, Dr Sylvia Demas.
Demas made these remarks during a stakeholder engagement session with the National Council Standing Committee on Education in Otjiwarongo. The briefing aimed to engage stakeholders in the sector to gain a better understanding of the challenges they are facing.
However, agriculture graduates are not the only ones facing challenges in securing employment. According to Demas, graduates in education and the sciences are also increasingly struggling to find work.
“Education has not been like this, but this is the first time that education is showing such a high unemployment rate among graduates. For science students, we have seen in the previous year that science students are also one of the largest groups who graduate. However, they are also part of those who do not find jobs,” Demas revealed.
