THE Ministry of Environment has relocated several wildlife species from Etosha National Park to other areas to restore animal populations in areas that were affected by prolonged drought.
“The game translocations were done to restock certain species populations that were reduced by prolonged droughts and to provide prey for predators such as lions and curb human-wildlife conflicts while increasing overall biodiversity in these areas,” the ministry explained.
The ministry revealed that it relocated 256 springboks and 190 gemsboks to Kunene Region, 90 plain zebras to Nyae Nyae Conservancy as well as 15 gemsboks and 24 plain zebras to Uukwaluudhi Conservancy. The translocation took place between 22 and 29 June 2026.
“In addition, the Ministry plans to translocate 150 gemsboks to Kunene, 20 giraffes and 200 common impalas to Nyae Nyae in the coming months,” the ministry disclosed.
