NAMIBIA will host the 2026 International Youth Day (IYD) national commemorations in Keetmanshoop, //Kharas Region, on 12 August 2026, with young people set to take centre stage in discussions on innovation, technology and global cooperation.
The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC) announced that this year’s event will be held under the theme “Youth Advancing Multilateral Cooperation through Technology and Partnerships”, highlighting the role of young people in driving innovation, strengthening international collaboration and contributing to sustainable development.
International Youth Day is observed annually on 12 August under the United Nations framework and serves to recognise the contributions of young people while drawing attention to challenges such as unemployment, education access, health and civic participation.
Namibia last hosted the national IYD commemorations in Windhoek in 2025, where youth from all 14 regions gathered under the theme “Local Youth Actions for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Beyond.” During that event, government and development partners urged young people to take up leadership roles across all sectors, while emphasising the importance of youth participation in decision-making and local development.
Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Dino Ballotti, said at the 2025 event that young people are “leaders today” and must actively step into opportunities in politics, entrepreneurship, innovation and the creative industries.
UNFPA Namibia Country Representative Ms Erika Goldson also stressed that youth voices are critical in shaping inclusive and sustainable policies, noting their proximity to community challenges and solutions.
Building on that momentum, MEIYSAC says the 2026 commemorations will focus on strengthening partnerships between young people, government, and international stakeholders, while promoting digital transformation and youth-led innovation.
The United Nations established International Youth Day in 1999, with the first commemoration held in 2000, and continues to promote youth development globally through its Youth Strategy aimed at empowering young people and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals.
