Pensioner loses N$27,000 in phone scam at Henties Bay

Staff Reporter

AN ELDERLY woman lost N$27,030 after a fraudster posing as a bank official allegedly called her and tricked her into sharing her bank details on Friday.

According to the police, the incident occurred at a salon in Henties Bay when the victim was contacted telephonically and convinced to reveal her banking information to an unknown suspect, who proceeded to withdraw money fraudulently. The stolen funds have not been recovered and no arrests have been made.

The Namibian Police’s repeated warnings to members of the public never to share their bank details over the phone — even when the caller claims to be from a bank or government office — have largely gone unheeded.

The Henties Bay case adds to a growing list of phone and electronic fraud cases targeting pensioners and small business owners.
