/Goagoses issues stern warning over veld fires in Erongo Region

Staff Reporter

THE Governor of the Erongo Region, Nathalia /Goagoses, has warned those responsible for veld fires that they will face prosecution if caught.

She issued the warning during her 2026 Erongo State of the Region Address in Swakopmund, where she highlighted the region’s progress, challenges, and development priorities.

During her address, she revealed that the region had recorded above-normal rainfall since last year, which has improved pastureland for livestock. However, according to /Goagoses, this achievement was undermined by wildfires in some parts of the region, which caused significant damage to grazing areas.

“The region has recorded above-normal rainfall, leading to improved pastureland. Meanwhile, sporadic wildfires occurred in Omatjete, Spitzkoppe, Uis, Usakos and Okombahe, resulting in an estimated loss of 40 to 50 hectares of pastureland,” she revealed.

She therefore urged local authorities and traditional leaders to intensify public awareness of the dangers and consequences of veld fires.

“I urge all leaders, including the esteemed traditional leaders, to kindly sensitise their communities to the consequences of veld fires. Those involved, knowingly or unknowingly, should refrain from such actions and stop such behaviour, or they will face prosecution,” /Goagoses said.
