UPDATE: Criminals plundered and vandalised the vehicle of tourists near the iconic Spitzkoppe area in the early morning hours at a campsite. The thieves broke car windows and, when they could not find any valuables, also attempted to enter the tents in which the guests had been sleeping. Eyewitness reports state that the thieves looted cash and electronics, amongst other things. The Namibian Police from the Usakos police station are said to have attended the scene. Tony Hart, a Namibian travel enthusiast, commented that incidents like these have unfortunately affected clients at various facilities around Namibia, but that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible. Hart added that a previous incident more than a year ago led to strong action, which helped deter further attacks for some time, and expressed support for the Spitzkoppe community camp while calling for those responsible to be brought to justice. “Hopefully the authorities can act swiftly, improve security measures, and ensure that visitors and locals alike feel safe again at this beautiful destination,” Hart said.
