THE Oranjemund Town Council has announced that access to the Orange River and nearby flooded areas is currently prohibited due to rising water levels and strong currents.
“The Oranjemund Town Council hereby informs all residents and visitors that the Orange River’s water level is rising and the flow is currently strong. Therefore, access to the river and surrounding flooded areas is not permitted due to hazardous conditions, including swimming or entering the river, as the ground is highly unstable and may collapse without warning,” the council explained in a statement.
The council emphasised that these measures are necessary to safeguard lives and prevent drowning incidents.

“For your safety, do not drive close to the river or attempt to enter flooded areas. Residents are further advised to avoid the river mouth area and the beach, as large amounts of debris have been washed downstream, making conditions particularly dangerous at this time,” the Oranjemund Town Council added.
This comes after the Hydrological Services of Namibia warned that water levels in the Orange River have risen, prompting caution. At Blouputs, the river level stood at 4.11 metres on Friday, while at Sendelingsdrift it stood at 4.25 metres on the same date.
“Water levels along the Orange River remain relatively high, and all river users and communities along the river are advised to exercise caution and remain vigilant,” the Hydrological Services warned.
