THE Presidency of South Africa says President Cyril Ramaphosa respects the Constitutional Court’s judgment declaring Parliament’s decision to reject the Section 89 Independent Panel Report into the Phala Phala scandal unconstitutional.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Presidency said the ruling in the case brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters challenging the National Assembly’s decision regarding the Section 89 proceedings against Ramaphosa.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa respects the Constitutional Court’s judgment and reaffirms his commitment to the Constitution, the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law,” the statement read.

The Presidency further added that Ramaphosa has consistently cooperated with various inquiries into the matter and remains committed to due process.

“President Ramaphosa maintains that no person is above the law and that any allegations should be subjected to due process without fear, favour or prejudice,” the statement added.

The President also called on South Africans to respect the Constitutional Court judgment and all judicial institutions.

The Constitutional Court earlier ruled that Parliament’s 13 December 2022 decision to reject the Section 89 Independent Panel Report was unconstitutional, reopening the possibility of impeachment proceedings linked to the Phala Phala matter.
